PacketCable
PacketCable? is a CableLabs?-led project to define a common platform to deliver advanced real-time multimedia services over two-way cable plant. Built on top of the industry?s DOCSIS? 1.1 (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications) cable modem infrastructure, PacketCable networks use Internet protocol (IP) technology as the basis for a highly capable multimedia architecture. A DOCSIS 1.1 network with PacketCable extensions enables cable operators to deliver data and voice traffic efficiently and economically using a single high-speed, quality-of-service (QoS)-enabled broadband architecture.
PacketCable interconnects 3 networks:
- HFC (Hybrid Fiber Coaxial) Access Network
- PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network)
- TCP/IP Managed IP Networks
PacketCable Protocols
- DOCSIS
- RTP and RTCP required for voice, FAX, and modem traffic
- TGCP an MGCP extension for Media Gateways
- NCS an MGCP extension for analog residential Media Gateways
- COPS the Common Open Policy Service, for controlling access.
