DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) is the standard for cable modems developed by CableLabs. There are 4 versions of the standard:

• DOCSIS 1.0 - targeted at 1995-1996 technology, widely deployed around the world
• DOCSIS 1.1 - enhanced verion of DOCSIS 1.0, particulary the QOS features
• DOCSIS 2.0 - features much higher upstream throughput
• eDOCSIS - in development, a framework for embedding DOCSIS cable modems in other products

DOCSIS is an international ITU, SCTE, and ETSI standard.
